Another Summarizing Trick

We've been working very hard on finding the main idea and writing summaries this quarter. This week we worked on writing short summary statements for a couple of classic seasonal stories. We figure out the "somebody", or characters. Next, we stated what the character "wanted" in the story. Then we found the "But", or the problem and then finally we wrote the "So" or solution to the problem. Every fiction story has a problem and a solution and good readers are able to state both after reading.

Something New in Spelling

We tried something new today and it went great! We use Spellingcity.com to practice our spelling words throughout the week. There is an option on this site to take the spelling test as well. They can hear the word as many times as they like as well as a sentence with it. This is great for kids that might want me to repeat words during the regular test, but might feel nervous to ask. They do it at their own pace and get an immediate score with the correct spelling for any missed. It is also a practical way to practice our typing skills. It went great today! We printed a copy, so watch for them in their Tuesday folders. In order to do it this way, we need to do the spelling test on Thursdays instead of Fridays. I told them that they can retake the test on Friday if they would like to or feel they need more time to study. I have enough time on Fridays for retakes, just not for the whole class at one time. I hope this works great! We'll try it again next week and see if it goes just as well.
